Box trucks are typically 10–26 ft (3.0–7.9 m) in length and can range from Class 3 to Class 7 (12,500 lb. to 33,000 lb. gross vehicle weight rating). They often have a garage door-like rear door that rolls up.
A dry van is a type of semi-trailer that's fully enclosed to protect shipments from outside elements. Designed to carry palletized, boxed or loose freight, dry vans aren't temperature-controlled (unlike refrigerated “reefer” units) and can't carry oversized shipments (unlike flatbed trailers).
“Reefer” is slang for refrigerated. The truck is your standard semi-cab. However, the reefer really is just the trailer. A “reefer truck,” then, is a semi pulling a refrigerated trailer, designed to haul perishable goods. These trailers differ from cooling vans, which are just insulated and vented.
Flatbed shipping is transportation for cargo that may not require the enclosure of a dry van, cannot be loaded or unloaded from a dock or does not fit within the dimensions of standard truck trailers. A flatbed's design allows for cranes and forklifts to load goods from all angles.
Power-only" means that the carrier supplies the semi-tractor plus truck driver (the "power unit"), while the shipper provides the trailer.
Hot shot loads are defined as freight that needs to be delivered fast and is small enough to fit in a box truck or on a removable gooseneck.
Trailer Types & Dimensions ; Length: Total, 48' - 53' ; Length: Lower Deck, 37' - 43' ; Length: Upper Deck, 10' - 11' ; Width, 102" ; Height: Lower Deck, 36 - 42".
A cargo van is a one-piece vehicle; the cargo area and passenger area are one. This means the cargo area can be conveniently accessed from inside the vehicle. You'll typically find them fitted with a sliding side door and rear doors for the loading and unloading of cargo.
